Advanced accountancy apprentice at Hultons Landscapes

What led you to enrol on an apprenticeship?

I decided to enrol as an apprentice after applying for roles in the finance and banking industry, to no success. Most job vacancies required experience or prior knowledge of the industry, which I didn’t have. A relative of mine was already undertaking the AAT accountancy apprenticeship and sung Damar’s praises. After researching the AAT qualification and Damar as a provider, I realised that this is what I needed to do to enable me to get a job in this field.

What did your role as an apprentice entail?

My role as an apprentice entailed me, to go to Damar to study accounting theory every week. I felt it was necessary to study one or two nights in the week, as well as a few hours at the weekend and more when an exam was coming up.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?

I have always enjoying learning new things and finding ways to better myself. I think this is the thing I have enjoyed the most about my apprenticeship. From a young age, I wanted to be a Financial Advisor, and although that isn’t my current ambition, I have stayed loyal to wanting to work in this field. I have also enjoyed the support and help that I have received off my tutors, Jen and Ange, who are always willing to assist and offer guidance.

What has been a personal highlight of your apprenticeship?

My highlight to date is that I have passed all the AAT exams I have sat. I’m proud of myself for this.

Have you got any advice for school leavers looking for the right career path?

The best advice I ever received was from a colleague who said you need to find out what you love, and then figure out how to make money from it. I also think you need to consider that you could potentially be doing this for the next 50 years, so go for something that you will continually enjoy with many chances of progression.

Simon Price, Finance Director at Hultons Landscapes says:

“At Hultons Landscapes we are all about developing our staff. Lauren’s AAT studies have gone hand in hand with the various roles she has held within the business and her development has been impressive. This kind of training brings great tangible benefits on both a personal level for Lauren and for the business as a whole”.
