Housing

Damar delivers advanced apprenticeships in housing in partnership with a sector specialist, HHSC Training & Consultancy Services. The qualification is designed for people who work in the housing sector, often with local authorities, housing associations, private sector landlords and organisations working with the homeless. Jobs carried out by advanced apprentices in housing include:

  • Housing Assistant
  • Housing Officer
  • Rents Administrator
  • Benefits Advisor
  • Tenancy Manager

An advanced apprenticeship in housing can be a progression route for people who work with an employer in the housing sector and have studied business and administration or customer service as a first apprenticeship.

The advanced apprenticeship is the first stepping stone to a career as a housing specialist. The qualification leads to membership of the Chartered Institute of Housing and, as such, represents a "licence to practice" for many key positions in the housing sector. Learners can also use the qualification as a progression route to a degree.

Because this is a professional qualification the pricing structure for learners aged 19 and over is different to that for most other apprenticeships; please call a member of our recruitment team for details.

Because it is an advanced apprenticeship, this qualification is suitable for staff who work autonomously and may also have some supervisory responsibility.

What you learn will depend on your job. In all cases you will complete:

The technical certificate for this qualification is the Chartered Institute of Housing Level 3 Certificate in Housing Practice, designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of your area of work. The Certificate involves training both in the workplace as well as attendance at a monthly one day workshop, normally held at our training centre.

Key skills in communication and application of number. Unlike school exams, these are designed to ensure that you have the skills in maths and English that you need at work. We support you with 1:1 and small group training where necessary. Key skills are assessed by way of a portfolio (which will be related to your job) and online tests.

A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). The NVQ is designed to develop and assess your competence in your job role. It is mostly completed at work with the support of your assessor. As well as mandatory components assessing the key competencies that any employee requires, such as self organisation and the safety of you and your clients, effective communication, productive team working and the ability to improve their own performance, each apprenticeship can be tailored to meet the needs of their sector.

Here is what one of our apprentices might learn:

Job: Housing Officer
Qualification: Advanced apprenticeship

In your NVQ you might learn about:

  • Inspecting the condition of property
  • Setting-up and managing tenancy, licence and leaseholder agreements
  • Selling property to customers within a housing organisation setting
