Mandy Charlton – Legal Services Apprentice at Freers Askew Bunting Solicitors Limited

What is your current role?

I’m a Personal Assistant and Senior Legal Secretary for the Senior Partner of Freers Askew Bunting Solicitors Limited.

Which apprenticeship are you undertaking?

The CILEx Advanced Apprenticeship in Legal Services (Property Pathway).

What does your role involve?

My role is a varied role which involves working in residential conveyancing which includes taking clients’ initial instructions right the way through to completion. I also do commercial conveyancing, work in the wills and probate department and create Lasting Powers of Attorneys from drafting to having them registered with the Court of Protection. A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you (the 'donor') appoint one or more people (known as 'attorneys') to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf. I have worked here for 17 years.

How do you juggle work and being a mum?

It can be really complicated at times because I have an extremely busy job and so I don’t have a lot of time during the week to spend with my daughter.  We have both joined a local gym which we go to most nights to have a catch-up. She loves telling me what she has done at school. When I am not studying for my apprenticeship, we go out at the weekend or watch movies and have a ‘girly day’.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Doing new things each day, learning on the job and developing relationships with my colleagues.

How are you hoping to spend Mother’s Day this year?

Hopefully, I will be spending it with my family in a restaurant somewhere or going out for a relaxing day where I will not have to think about work or my apprenticeship!
