Farnfields Solicitors gives young apprentices a pathway into Law

Meril George and Katie Mead (both aged 20) from Farnfields Solicitors have completed their Business Administration Apprenticeships, defying the common stereotype that the only way into law, is by attending university. The pair undertook their apprenticeships in the Gillingham and Shaftesbury offices respectively, as part of a course run by Damar Training

Meril (pictured left) and Katie (pictured right) both started their apprenticeships aged 18, after leaving Gillingham School, having seen a job advert for two apprenticeship placements with the firm.

Farnfields prides itself on offering young people a career, and a way into what may at first seem a daunting profession; law. The apprenticeship scheme offers many young people a different pathway and helps to connect local schools and the community, with the firm. Over the years it has offered many young members of the community a chance to enter law, via apprenticeships. The firm offer three apprenticeships every 18 months, and also invites school students to take part in a week’s work experience with the firm.

Helen Hunter, HR Manager at Farnfields Solicitors said, “The departments that Meril and Katie work in are very busy and demanding areas and they have handled the work with maturity and professionalism, and shown signs of experience far beyond the couple of years that they have been working at the firm.”

Both Meril and Katie are gaining valuable experience, working very closely with experienced team members, solicitors and lawyers. The apprenticeship provides a springboard into the world of law, with the potential to progress into a law career, which many incorrectly think is only accessible to university students.

The course required Meril and Katie to demonstrate knowledge, skills and competency in key business areas such as communicating, using the telephone and email, managing diary systems and providing reception services amongst other things.

Kerry Gilbert, Legal Programmes Manager “It has been an absolute pleasure training and assessing Meril and Katie as they were both passionate about this qualification and both worked extremely hard during the course of their apprenticeships. Farnfield’s provides a supportive environment for their legal administrative apprentices and are extremely keen to see them succeed.”

Meril added “Kerry Gilbert of Damar Training has been an encouraging and enthusiastic tutor throughout this whole process and has always taken the time to go through the units involved in this apprenticeship by offering guidance, learning materials and support.”

The apprenticeship embedded functional skill elements which included Maths, English and ICT and many interesting topics on British Values.

It is great news to see two young local members of the community taking their first steps into a law career and who are now training to be Legal Secretaries.
