We have a comprehensive offer for people wishing to study for the CLC/SQA Diplomas in Conveyancing Law and Practice both on a standalone basis and as part of an apprenticeship.

“We are delighted that Damar has become a provider of education leading to qualification as a CLC Lawyer - Licensed Conveyancer by distance learning and the exciting new apprenticeship route. The new education providers will widen access to a career in the legal profession yet further and increase the pipeline of newly qualified specialist property lawyers to meet demand in the sector.”
Sheila Kumar, Chief Executive of the Council for Licensed Conveyancers.

The CLC/SQA Diplomas in Conveyancing Law and Practice are a flexible and good value option for anyone wanting to become a qualified conveyancing lawyer, regulated by the Council of Licenced Conveyancers (CLC). The Diplomas can be studied either on a standalone basis or as part of the Conveyancing Technician or Licensed Conveyancer apprenticeship standards.

The cost to become a Licenced Conveyancer via the CLC/SQA Diploma route is less than one year’s university fees and costs can be spread over the study period. For apprentices there is no cost at all, although an employer contribution is generally required.

Details of the content of each of the Diplomas are available on the CLC’s website here. For more information on our courses and to apply, please follow the links below. You might also like to watch a recording of a webinar hosted by our Managing Director from 11th January 2017 here which explains the qualifications in more detail and answers some frequently asked questions. Please see all the questions from the webinar answered here.

We offer at least two courses per year for each unit. This means you can register at any time and will be enrolled on the next course for that unit. Courses over the next 6 months are as follows:

March 2017:

Law of Contract (Level 4)

Understanding Accounting Issues for Conveyancing Transactions (L4) (C1)

Conveyancing Law and Practice (Level 6)

June 2017:

English Legal System (Level 4)

Standard Conveyancing Transactions (Level 4)

Land Law (Level 4)

Landlord and Tenant (Level 6)

Managing Client and Office Accounts (Level 6)

This is an enriched distance-learning programme, delivered by tutors with significant experience of delivering the CLC qualifications. Key elements of the programme include structured support for each unit, namely:

  • A comprehensive printed course manual.
  • A fortnightly webinar linked to the manual.
  • Additional study materials to embed the fortnightly learning content.
  • A mini-assessment once a fortnight so that you know you are on track.
  • An online forum moderated by the course trainer so you can have your questions answered.
  • Revision webinar at the end of each course.
  • Final assessment and certification

If you miss the live webinar you can watch it online.

At Level 4, all but one of the assessments can be completed at work or at home, limiting the need to travel. At Level 6, you can choose to sit your exams at centres in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds or Manchester.

Programme lengths are either four months (English Legal System), six months (other level 4 units) or eight months (level 6 units).

Students will normally study either one or two units at a time which means that completing all eight units will take approximately three years for most students.

All Damar tutors are lawyers with strong vocational experience. Our conveyancing tutors for the initial courses are:

Anne Hartley

Anne is a qualified property lawyer with many years' experience in practice. She has tutored across all the CLC units as well as delivering training in property law and conveyancing to students with a number of universities and colleges including the Open University and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.

Andrew Myerson

Andrew is a a solicitor with 30 years’ experience in private practice across the full range of CLC activities. He has been delivering CLC and related training since 2003, including running revision courses, assessing student work and setting, marking and moderating exams. Andrew has also been involved in writing the course manuals for the CLC/SQA units.

  • The units in the Level 4 Diploma are examined via a series of assessments. With the exception of the accounting unit (where the assessment takes place under exam conditions) you will usually have one or two weeks to complete these before submitting them for marking.
  • The units in the Level 6 Diploma have more traditional exams which take place at the end of the course.
  • You will be able to sit exams at the exam centre closest to you in either London, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds or Manchester.

We want all of our students to succeed first time, which is why our study programmes include a revision session and ongoing mini-assessments to ensure you fully understand the syllabus. However, in the event that you are unsuccessful at the first attempt you can re-submit the assessment for free or, if it is a final exam, re-enrol on our next course for that unit at no additional cost.

You can register at any time but will be enrolled on the next course for your chosen unit(s). Courses over the next 6 months are as follows:

March 2017:

Law of Contract (Level 4)

Understanding Accounting Issues for Conveyancing Transactions (L4) (C1)

Conveyancing Law and Practice (Level 6)

June 2017:

English Legal System (Level 4)

Standard Conveyancing Transactions (Level 4)

Land Law (Level 4)

Landlord and Tenant (Level 6)

Managing Client and Office Accounts (Level 6)

The first webinars will be scheduled in late March/June and students will have pre-reading to do before the courses start.

We plan to offer at least two enrolment dates a year for students wishing to attend the live webinars. We may also offer completely flexible enrolment dates for students who are happy to use the recorded sessions.

We recommend that all students have good GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications in maths and English. Many students will be qualified to at least A level standard.

It is not necessary for new students to have any prior experience, knowledge, skills or understanding of conveyancing procedure and practice.

When you have passed all the Level 4 assessments you will gain the Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice and be ready to enrol on the Level 6 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice.

Once you have passed all the Level 6 assessments you will gain the Level 6 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice.

Once you have the Level 6 Diploma and appropriate work experience you can apply to the Council for Licensed Conveyancers to become a Licensed Conveyancers - a qualified, professional property lawyer specialising in the legalities surrounding buying and selling property in England and Wales.

The CLC/SQA diplomas also form part of the content for the Conveyancing Technician and Licensed Conveyancer apprenticeships. The apprenticeships are broader study programmes however. In particular, there is an additional end-point assessment that includes a scenario-based test and the production of a “showcase” portfolio to demonstrate the apprentice's competence.

Apprentices and their employers also receive additional support in the form of regular 1:1 tutorials from a Damar tutor.

People of all ages and existing as well as new staff can become apprentices. However:

  • Apprentices need to be employed, for 30+ hours a week, in a conveyancing environment.
  • For the Conveyancing Technician apprenticeship, the apprentice should not have prior qualifications higher than A level.
  • Employer support is required as training visits and study take place during working hours.
  • The apprentice’s main place of work must be in England.

Whilst there is no cost for eligible apprentices an employer contribution is generally required. However, Government subsidies mean the net cost is generally less than the cost of the standalone Diplomas.

There is more information about the apprenticeships here.

  • We are committed to vocational legal education - you will be joining 500+ other Damar students employed in the legal and justice sectors.
  • No large up-front cost. We charge the same all-inclusive monthly cost for each unit.
  • We are Ofsted inspected and are registered with the SQA as an approved centre for the qualifications.
  • Our tutors are conveyancing specialists who have been delivering CLC qualifications for many years. They have helped to write some of the handbooks and marked final assessments.
  • Dedicated virtual learning environment for conveyancing students.
  • Structured programme of live webinars and additional study materials.
  • Watch again if you miss a webinar or to revise.
  • Assessments take place at work/home or a conveniently located exam centre.
