What led you to enrol on an apprenticeship?
After completing my studies in college I realised I needed a job to support myself and my parents. It was a difficult time for me and I needed to make a decision whether to stop studying and look for a job. However I wanted to complete my studies in business but I was not able to do this. Having seeing the apprenticeship post and what they have to offer I was quick to realise that this was the best opportunity for me to get where I wanted. I read up on apprentices’ success stories and this motivated me to enrol onto an apprenticeship.
What does your role as an apprentice entail?
As an A2 administrator I supported project managers and project leads with major change projects within the organisation. I assisted with managing correspondence, organising and preparing for meetings & conferences and maintaining digital document libraries which includes keeping project documents up to date. At the same time I would meet with my apprenticeship tutor every month, sometimes more, to study for my business exams. I was extremely lucky that I had a great tutor, Jeanette Carle, and my manager, Fraser Mayet, who have helped me all the way and kept pushing me when I needed it the most!
What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?
I enjoyed doing a variety of different tasks such as coursework, exams and at the same time doing practical work on the job. I believe I was able to progress further this way. What also made my experience even more enjoyable was my relationship between my line manager and tutor. I was always able to easily approach them for help and advice. I had developed a great relationship with my colleagues which always made the day go a lot smoother. Working for such a great team I was able to learn so much more than I ever dreamt of.
What has been a personal highlight of your apprenticeship?
Having gotten all the support and advice I have managed to get a permanent post and a promotion at the completion of my apprenticeship! This would never have been possible without the help of my tutor and my qualification.
Have you got any advice for school leavers looking for the right career path?
Do not see an apprenticeship as a second choice. It is the best of both worlds! University is a great option but an apprenticeship is just as brilliant. I honestly believe if you have ambition then taking on an apprenticeship will be your best choice! We all have this fear and follow onto university but sometimes we need to research apprentices and it will open your eyes to a lot more great opportunities.
