If you are like me and school and college wasn't your thing then I would highly recommend an apprenticeship. It helped me better myself as a person.

Level 2 Certificate in Accounting

What led you to enrol on an apprenticeship?

I enrolled on an apprenticeship because I liked the fact that you can learn and earn at the same time. It helps me get a better understanding of what a job is actually like, whereas being at college you wouldn’t. You learn a lot of life skills including communication and it helps you prepare for what lies ahead. If you are like me and school and college wasn’t your thing then I would highly recommend an apprenticeship. It helped me better myself as a person.

What does your role as an apprentice entail?

My role as an apprentice is similar to anyone else doing accounts but instead, I learn things as I go along. I find myself learning something new every day. To date, I have done VAT returns every quarter, tax returns for people who are self-employed, annual and management accounts and I throughout the year, I will continue to take on more responsibilities and gain more skills.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?

What I enjoyed the most about my apprenticeship is the learning side of things. I have learnt a lot over the past 2 years, even having 9 months out. I managed to pick things back up rather quickly after returning to work. I enjoy the work side of things too. I feel proud when I hand a file in for review, especially when it comes back with no review points. When the manager is in meetings with clients I think “I did those accounts”.

What has been a personal highlight of your apprenticeship?

My personal highlight of my apprenticeship was passing my level 2 AAT. I had just started in January 2016 at Damar and completed the bookkeeping exam when I had my accident in April 2016. I returned to work in January 2017 when I was told by my tutor that AAT had changed the standards and I had until the 31st December 2017 to learn and complete 4 units. I passed my final exam on the 23rd November and am very proud of what I have managed to achieve, despite my setbacks.

Have you got any advice for school leavers looking for the right career path?

My advice for school leavers is to go for an apprenticeship in an industry you like. I personally wasn’t a fan of school and thought I wasn’t going to go very far but I proved to everyone that I could achieve my goals without going to college. You’re capable of doing anything if you put your head down and set yourself a goal and I truly believe this.
