Find out more about Emma in our interview below.
What led you to enrol on an apprenticeship?
After finishing school, I was unsure of what I wanted to do, just like most students. However, whilst attending college, I fell in love with accounting and knew that this was something I wanted to do. I didn’t like the idea of university what with having a debt to pay off at the age of 21, and moving away from home so apprenticeships had always been of interest to me. I found out that I could work towards a recognised qualification through an accounts apprenticeship and that really sealed the deal for me so I began applying straight away.
What does your role as an apprentice entail?
For the first year and a half of starting my AAT accountancy apprenticeship with Damar, I worked in the accounts department of an Electrical Wholesalers carrying out duties of Purchase Ledger Clerk. During that time, I decided that industry wasn’t me and I was interested in working in a practice, so in February 2015, I joined the Payroll Team at Sedulo. Here, I carry out weekly and monthly payroll duties for clients and answer any queries.
I also ensure that all confirmation statements for our clients are filed on time along with submitting any changes the company may have during the year i.e. stock transfer forms, appointing and terminating directors.
By the end of 2016, I hope to have progressed in my role to help complete the year end accounts. The team at Sedulo are always happy to support your decisions which will help you to grow in your career.
What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?
It’s hard to say really. I’ve just enjoyed the whole experience of being in a job that I’m really passionate about and being able to study that particular area.
What has been a personal highlight of your apprenticeship?
The support and guidance of the accounts team at Damar, especially Steve Ainsworth who supported me through a bereavement. Without Steve’s help, I don’t think I would have ever passed Accounts Preparation. I am delighted that the tutors are always there for you and will help you in any way they can.
Have you got any advice for school leavers looking for the right career path?
University isn’t the only option any more. There are many different ways to gain experience and qualifications.
Elaine Cheetham-Karcz, Payroll & Company Secretarial Manager at Sedulo comments:
“Emma has been completing her apprenticeship with Sedulo and has been able to build her confidence and experience of all aspects of accountancy such as administration, payroll, company secretarial and taxes”
“The experience she has gained has given Emma the confidence and skills to join a dynamic accounts team. I am looking forward to seeing Emma gaining further experience and ultimately achieving her goal of becoming ACCA qualified”.
