Hannah Middleton at QualitySolicitors Burn & Company is blazing a trail – she is the first paralegal apprentice to be appointed in York.
Following in family footsteps
Hannah’s father trained as an apprentice. Inspired by his success, the 19-year-old wanted to go straight into a career after completing three A Levels in English literature, psychology and sociology.
She says: “Going to university straight after school did not appeal to me. There’s no guarantee you will get a job when you have finished a degree. My father was an apprentice, and has been successful. My father runs his own business in York. An Apprenticeship seemed like the right choice for me.”
Earn and learn
Hannah started her Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship at York-based QualitySolicitors Burn & Company in July 2014. As part of the Apprenticeship, she is studying for a Diploma in Providing Legal Services and a Certificate in Family Practice, both at Level 3. The Apprenticeship is being delivered by Damar and the qualifications are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx).. Hannah completes her studies as part of an online class whilst at work and at home. She also meets with her Damar tutor once a month.
Hannah has spent time so far in family law and litigation, and regularly attends court. She adds: “I’m really enjoying what I do. I don’t mind the Apprenticeship ‘tag’. I am able to work and study at the same time. I love the variety – no two days are the same and every case is different. I feel as though I have fitted in really well. My ambition is to go to a higher level in the profession by becoming a legal executive or studying a law degree later.”
