Apprenticeships are a great way of earning an income while being able to figure out if it is actually a career you want to pursue.

Admissions Appeals and School Placement Officer | School Services at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

What led you to enrol on an apprenticeship?

After finishing college, I went straight to University and after a year, I found that it wasn’t really for me. Although I enjoyed being in academia, I found that I much preferred the working environment. I worked the odd job in hospitality and retail, but neither were a career I particularly wanted to pursue.

After spending a lot of time researching online, I decided I would like to pursue a career in a business environment and found that an Apprenticeship would be a great way to start. I would be able to get a job with little to no administration experience and gain a qualification.

What does your role as an apprentice entail?

I started working at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council as a level 3 apprentice doing administrative work and liaising with school staff and residents in person, over the phone and by email. After completing the level 3, I started my level 5 apprenticeship in management and leadership with Damar at SMBC. This allowed me to take on more responsibilities at work, including presenting to large groups of senior staff and taking on managerial tasks.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?

I have enjoyed working with such a lovely team who have been very welcoming. My managers have been extremely supportive and accommodating; helping me develop my apprenticeship in to a career I hope to progress over the years. It is really interesting to learn about management and leadership theories while applying them to my day-to-day role.

What has been a personal highlight of your apprenticeship?

The highlight of my apprenticeship was welcoming new apprentices in to the team. I became responsible for training any new apprentices and help them through their journey whilst passing on the knowledge and skills I have learned during my experience.

Have you got any advice for school leavers looking for the right career path?

It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to do. I didn’t start an apprenticeship until five years after I left college and tried higher education, only to discover that it wasn’t for me. Find something you enjoy and are interested in. Apprenticeships are a great way to earn an income while being able to figure out if it is actually a career you want to pursue.
