Paralegal apprenticeships take another step forwards

The next step in the development of the legal apprenticeship pathway is here with the launch of the advanced apprenticeship in legal services. Apprentices will be able to start their courses from September but firms are being encouraged to start recruiting now to secure the best candidates.

Manchester-based specialist Damar Training is working with law firms nationally and has been closely involved in developing the intermediate and higher level legal apprenticeships which are already on offer.

The new advanced apprenticeship is perfect for those “graduate calibre” candidates who, increasingly, are looking at options other than university after leaving school or college. It also matches the aspirations of law firms that are looking to recruit more paralegal staff as a result of changes to the way that legal services are delivered.

The advanced apprenticeship incorporates Chartered Institute of Legal Executives qualifications as well as relevant training in business and practical legal skills. Specific legal practice areas covered include family law, employment, property, civil litigation and private client.

Because apprentices are in full-time employment, Damar has developed extensive new e-learning resources that allow students to access content at times to suit them. This is complemented by 1:1 support from a specialist trainer (most sessions take place at work) and regular masterclasses with experienced practitioners.

Jonathan Bourne, Damar’s Managing Director commented:

“Our experience has been that employers need to be able to recruit apprentices as needs arise throughout the year and at different levels depending on their business requirements. Most larger firms also want to be able to offer programmes across all of their offices. Our paralegal apprenticeship offer allows firms to roll out an individualised programme that is matched to their firm’s needs, without having to structure the working week around a day release schedule.

We have been really impressed this year by the applicants for legal apprenticeships, many of whom have very strong predicted A level grades. This presents an opportunity for firms to recruit young people with great potential and then develop them valuable members of staff, some of whom will
progress to become the solicitors and even partners of the future.”
