In praise of apprentice supervisors – one employer’s story!

At Damar, we often say that great apprenticeship programmes are the result of a fantastic partnership between three key people – the apprentice, the trainer (or trainers) and the apprentice’s manager. The progression of one of our successful accounts apprentices, Lisa Cochran who works for Stockport Truck Centre demonstrates this perfectly. Emma Porter is Finance Director of Stockport Truck Centre and has been working with Lisa and Damar since June 2014. Here’s what she has to say about Lisa:

“When I joined Stockport Truck Centre, Lisa was finding her job and studies quite difficult to balance. She was demotivated and despondent both at work and in her attitude towards her studies. However, I recognised Lisa’s potential as an accountant and therefore wanted to help her find a good balance”

“Angela and Steve (her Damar trainers) worked with Lisa and I to establish the goals she wanted to achieve in her career and we created an action plan for her to work towards.  The key elements of this plan were to adjust Lisa’s responsibilities at work, ensuring that they correlated with her studies to help Lisa to pass her AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) accountancy exams with Damar.  We put in place a weekly mentoring session covering what she had learned at college that week and to discuss any areas where her understanding was lacking.  We also went through practice questions to prepare her for the lessons ahead”

“Lisa quickly adapted to these changes and her attitude towards work and studies changed in line with this.  She began to enjoy her studies and the tasks set for her at work, passing her exams with flying colours”

“Since June 2014, there have been marked improvements in Lisa’s personality and professionalism.  She has proven that she is extremely capable of learning and adapting to new skills and processes.  Lisa is adept at tackling issues head on and resolving problems directly.  She works hard, with impressive output, working in a flexible manner and delivers what is required”

“Lisa shows a straightforward and pragmatic approach to her work, with a clear focus on the end result at all times. I and the rest of the management team are more than happy to entrust Lisa with tasks and are very confident that they will be completed to a high standard”

“Lisa’s role has advanced from an accounts assistant, posting invoices, chasing debt and administrating day-to-day tasks to an assistant accountant working on bank reconciliations, management Information, detailed reports and cash flow forecasts, to name a few. As a result, Lisa has passed her higher level accountancy AAT exams with an excellent understanding”

“I’m extremely proud of the improvements and commitments that Lisa has shown over her time here. She is developing into a promising management accountant with exceptional potential. I consider her to be a valuable asset to my finance team and to the STC Group and look forward to working with her towards her professional CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) qualification”.
